Mérida, Mexico

Mérida is widely regarded as the safest city in Mexico. It is the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan and has a rich Mayan and colonial heritage. Mérida is located in the northwest part of the state of Yucatán, which occupies the northern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. To the east is the state of Quintana Roo, to the west is the state of Campeche, and to the north is the Gulf of Mexico. Accessible via Mérida International Airport (MID) and also a four hour drive from Cancun and Tulum.

Mérida

Mérida is quickly becoming home for ex pats and former residents of Mexico City and developing into a culturally rich city with great boutique hotels, bars, and restaurants popping up every day. It’s also known for its proximity to the popular Mayan archeological site Chichén Itzá as well as surrounding cenotes..

Cenotes

There are thousands of cenotes dotted all over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, and their existence is as much a defining characteristic of the region as is the distinct geological feature from which they result. A cenote is a deep sinkhole in limestone with a pool at the bottom that is found especially in Yucatán. Once revered by the ancient Mayans as sacred wells, they are now magnets for tourists, adventurers, and explorers alike. Cenote Suytun pictured here is a two hour drive from Mérida. Check out this link below for a map of cenotes in the area.

Chichén Itzá

One of the seven wonders of the world, Chichén Itzá is a large Mayan archaeological site and one of the most notable and recognized landmarks on the Yucatán. The site itself was originally a main hub of Mayan civilization and has since been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The focal point of the ruins is the pyramid-like El Castillo that was once used by Mayans as a temple to the god Kukulkan. A testament to the Mayans’ astronomical abilities, the structure features a total of 365 steps, the number of days in the solar year. Chichén Itzá is a one hour and thirty-five minute drive from Mérida.

Merida isn’t the easiest to travel to. There are no direct flights and it’s not a beachside destination. We chose it because we wanted to do something different and because we fell in love with the venue. If it feels like too much for you - we understand and support your decision. If you’re feeling adventurous, we can’t wait to party with you.
